The Huge Convenience Because Of Internet Shopping

Written by Jessica Knowles on June 4, 2010 – 10:06 am -

It may not have been that long ago, but it’s hard to imagine the time when online shopping wasn’t yet available. We had to make all of our purchases in person, over the phone, or via postal mail.

These methods of purchasing products and services still exist, but they are easily trumped in terms of convenience by online shopping. Almost every industry across the world has been seriously affected by the birth of e-commerce, and things have likely changed forever in this regard.

As e-commerce grew into an international phenomenon, the United States has shifted increasingly toward a service-based economy. Most manufacturing is now done outside of the U.S., in countries like China, Taiwan, and Japan. Some of the largest companies in the U.S. are now internet-related corporations.

Some companies don’t even offer physical products. Google only offers an information-retrieving service, yet it makes billions of dollars. Microsoft sells some manufactured goods, such as the Zune and Xbox, but the majority of its revenue comes from software sales.

E-commerce has also expanded the job market to a global scale. This vastly increased scale has provided more competition as well. Before the popularization of e-commerce, companies hired local professionals to work in an office and paid them full-time salaries.

The global marketplace has allowed companies to outsource certain aspects of their work to companies like India and Russia, and for a much lower cost. As technology improves and more jobs can be done via an internet connection, more jobs will be outsourced and those looking for work will find even more competition.

Even those who remember the days before the internet have come to accept online shopping. Baby boomers have lived without the convenience of online purchases for a large portion of their adult lives, but they have become increasingly devoted online shoppers.

They will likely only increase their reliance on shopping over the internet as they grow older and require more services. The e-commerce industry shows no signs of slowing down, and should continue to progress dramatically for at least another 20 years.
