My Lighter Hisses, But Wont Light

Written by Brian Mallikarjunan on May 18, 2010 – 2:57 pm -

Lighters are wonderful devices, with myriad uses. Cigar lighters, cigarette lighters, pipe lighters, Zippos and numerous other types provide smokers with the means to enjoy their preferred pastime. However, no matter how well you maintain your lighter, there may come a time when it does not operate correctly.

When the igniter of the lighter is pressed down, no flame appears. The lighter does, however, emit a hissing sound, as of fuel escaping. What could be going on? Whats wrong with your lighter? Actually, this situation can be remedied quite easily, though youll need to troubleshoot your lighter a bit first.

Before doing anything else, make sure that your lighter is not blocked with lint, dirt or debris. Even a small obstruction can keep your lighter from working properly. While checking this, keep your fingers well away from the igniter, in order to avoid potential harm. If you locate debris, remove it carefully and then attempt to ignite your lighter. If it still fails to light, youll need to dig a bit further.

How Many Times Can I Light a Typical Cigar Lighter?

Written by Brian Mallikarjunan on May 16, 2010 – 9:51 am -

A reliable, working cigar lighter is essential to being able to light up whenever you want. Whether you choose butane torch lighters (a choice growing in popularity) a Zippo or a disposable option, youll probably want to know just how many lights youll get out of it. This is an understandable question. However, you will not find a simple answer. Why is there no easy answer to this question? It certainly makes a great deal of sense to ask it, as the answer will determine just how much you have to spend on additional fuel or new lighters.

The reason there is no firm answer to this question is because lighters vary so wildly in flame configuration and flame type. In addition, some smokers take longer to light their cigars than do other smokers. Finally, you will need to understand a bit more about the process of lighting that cigar to develop a firm understanding of why you cannot answer your question adequately.

At least one manufacturer of disposable lighters claims that their products will light a staggering 3,000 times. However, that doesnt mean that youll be able to light or relight 3,000 cigars. Why not? You can certainly light such a lighter that many times, but you wont be able to apply that to lighting cigars. Why is there such confusion surrounding the topic?

Cut Your Cigar the Right Way

Written by Brian Mallikarjunan on April 8, 2010 – 3:14 pm -

One of the mistakes that many people make when they begin smoking cigars is cutting those cigars improperly. For those who haven’t been around the cigar culture for any length of time, this can be a confusing process. Many people try the old “bite and spit” method of getting their cigars ready. They will actually bite the end off the cigar and then spit the end onto the ground, their hand, or the ashtray. Not only is this considered rude in most circles, there is a good chance that you will ruin your cigar when you do this. You need to cut the cigar correctly, and the best way to do this is with a proper cutter or a torch cigar lighter and cutter combo.

The combination cutter is a great tool that includes not only something to cut your cigar, but also something with which you can light it. Of course, you might not have one of these cutters handy. If that is the case, then you can always resort to a pair of scissors or even a knife. If you choose to use a knife, be careful so that you don’t cut yourself by mistake.

How to Blow Smoke Rings

Written by Brian Mallikarjunan on April 1, 2010 – 1:35 pm -

Without a doubt, smoke rings are very impressive and they are a great trick to show off with at parties. While it might look easy to blow these rings, they are not quite as easy as you might think. You will need to practice ahead of time so that you can do them without any trouble.

When you are practicing your smoke rings, make sure that you have a good, tightly packed cigar. While some people use cigarettes, the tobacco in the cigarettes does not usually have as tight of a pack as the cigars do. When the tobacco is tightly packed, you will find that it is easier to get thicker, richer smoke, and this is a key element in blowing smoke rings.

The first thing that you will want to do is to light the cigar, preferably using cigar lighters as this will ensure that you evenly light the entire tip of the cigar. You will then take a large drag from the cigar and take in as much smoke as is comfortable. You will hold this in the top front part of your throat. It may take you a little while for you to get used to this, as it is different from the normal manner in which you smoke.
