Keeping Boredom At Bay As A Stay-At-Home Mom

Written by Pamela Roberts on June 23, 2010 – 4:28 am -

Staying home with your little one is a major decision. On the one hand, it provides a wonderful opportunity to strengthen the bonds between you and your baby. It also allows you to raise her according to your, and your partner’s, values.

On the other hand, it comes with sacrifices. Perhaps you made the decision to leave your career (and income) behind. For millions of stay-at-home parents, this means giving up a large portion of their daily interaction with other adults. This is one of the reasons many moms and dads who choose to remain at home with their babies complain of intense boredom.

Below, we’ll describe how to keep the boredom at bay. Each of the following suggestions require that you proactively look for opportunities to engage your mind and body on a regular basis.

Spend More Quality Time With Your Baby

Consider the manner in which you spend a typical day at home with your little one. You change her diapers, nurse or feed her, wash her laundry, and keep the house clean. All of these activities are done with your baby in mind, but can easily begin to take the place of quality time. The list of tasks seems endless, and thus little time is left to play with your infant.

Hunt down a note pad and scratch out all the things you want to complete over the next seven days. Perhaps your children have appointments or other types of activities? Are there bills that should be paid? Do you have a plan or recipes for meals each day? Do you have things that need to be completed outside the home?

Once you have written everything down, start organizing your next seven days. In other words, what can be completed by the end of the week? What must be done first and what ultimately can be done last? Don’t forget to review and place them in order of importance.
