Breaking In New Boots

There are loads of urban legends about the best way to break in a pair of Dr Martens. Some of these legends are funny, some are dangerous, most are a bit strange.

The tried and tested method is to cover your feet in Vaseline then put on a thick pair of socks over the top. With your boots still on get in the shower and turn it on, so that the boots become soaked through. You then need to wear them either until they dry our or for as long as you can stand. Most army recruits do it this way.

If you do not want to get into the shower with your DMs on, get them really damp by wrapping them in wet towels and putting them on. Whichever method you choose the key is to keep your boots on for as long as possible. DM fanatics say that you have to leave them on for 48hrs, including in bed! Dr Klaus Maertens the inventor of the famous Dr Martens boots made his first commercial footwear in 1947. To start with the majority of his customers were German housewives who found the air-soled footwear comfortable for all day wear. In 1959 the company Dr Martens was founded to distribute his shoes internationally. Dr Martens quickly began making safety boots and shoes for use in industrial settings.

The History Of Dr Martens Footwear

Most people think of Dr Martens as the maker of men’s work-boots, in reality the first commercial products that they made were popular with German housewives. Because they were on their feet all day it was the air-padded soles that attracted them.At first, 80% of his clients were women.

Klaus Martens was a doctor in the German army, when he found that the army boots he was issued with aggravated an old skiing injury, so he made his own pair of boots to help relieve the pain. In 1947 he teamed up with an old friend, Dr Herbert Funck to make the first pair of Dr Martens to be sold to the public.

By 1952 production was so high that they opened their first factory in Munich and began selling their shoes internationally in 1959. Part of this drive for international sales involved selling patent rights to R Giggs in the UK who produced and successfully marketed them there.

R Giggs re-branded the soles as AirWair, added yellow stitching and changed the shape of the heel. They sold their first pair on 1 April 1960. They were cherry red with 8 eye-holes for the laces, a style that are still sold today.  Read more...

Skateboarding was born in 50s. Surfers came up with the idea of surfing the streets. There is no accurate account on who made the very first skateboard but it seemed that it was an idea that no one person came up with. There have been others who have claimed it but nothing has been verified.
