The Journey From The Desert To The Global Market: The Story Of Hoodia

Written by Nathaniel Elliott on July 1, 2010 – 8:55 am -

Hoodia belongs to Apocynaceae, a flowering plant family with a genus of 13 species. Though they are not related to the cactus family, they look similar. It is a stem succulent. Reaching up to a meter in height, Hoodia has large flowers. The flowers have strong smell and often have a tan color. They are found in the natural habitats in Namib Desert in Africa spreading from southern Angola to Central Namibia. One of the several species of Hoodia, the Hoodia gordonii has been under investigation for use as an appetite suppressant. The plant has been extensively marketed across the world for weight loss. The San Bushmen of the Kalahari Desert are the originators of this claim. The plant takes five years to flower after which it is harvested. For centuries they have been using the plant for various purposes such as appetite suppressant when on long hunting trips in the desert and treating small infections and indigestion.

What To Bear In Mind When Selecting Greenhouse Lighting

Written by Owen Jones on July 1, 2010 – 4:31 am -

Gardening is a very popular hobby especially among homeowners, which means the over-thirties to be honest. A pretty garden certainly does make a house look better. However, bedding plants and fruit trees can be quite expensive, consequently a lot of gardeners want or already have some form of greenhouse so that they can propagate plants themselves and grow more exotic flowers and fruits.

It really depends on the type of greenhouse you have and where you live, but many greenhouses can be ‘adjusted’ to grow most varieties of plants from around the world. Global warming has helped in this respect as well. In most places, you can grow grapes from France or orchids from Thailand where as a rule such plants would die outside.

Therefore, having a greenhouse is a little like keeping a tropical fish tank. The gardener has brought those plants to a region of the planet where they cannot support themselves. They should not be there, so it is up to the gardener to create the circumstances in which those plants can thrive. This has mostly to do with ventilation, temperature control, humidity and lighting.

Organic Sprouting Seeds Can Be A Healthful Alternative

Written by Bryan Jones on June 25, 2010 – 8:38 am -

Organic sprouting seeds can be enjoyed individually or added to healthy stir fry dishes for a highly nutritious addition to your meal. They are also a good choice if you want to start your own vegetable patch from organically grown seed. Genetically modified seeds are infiltrating the market, often with negative effects upon our health and well-being. Growing organic ensures healthy produce.

Not only are they delicious, but they provide plenty of minerals, vitamins, proteins and nutrients essential to proper function of the cells and organs. They are relatively inexpensive to purchase and they continue growing until they are eaten, so they remain fresh.

Our digestive systems cope very well when digesting sprouting seeds and we benefit from them being at their peak growth cycle, compared to foods that have been stored for long periods and lose their nutritional value. Home grown organic sprouting seeds give you control over growth and storage conditions and ensure that the produce is not contaminated with harmful pesticides.

Home Mosquito Repellents

Written by Owen Jones on June 16, 2010 – 12:21 pm -

We all know that mosquitoes are pests. None of us likes being bitten by them. Most people say ‘bitten’ although this not accurate. ‘Stung’ is also not true. What the mosquito is really doing is taking some of your protein in the form of blood though her proboscis, so that her eggs will have something to feed upon while they are developing.

In consequence, your blood is supplying the albumen (the ‘white’) of the mosquitoes’ eggs. It therefore follows that it is only the female mosquito that ‘bites’. In the course of sucking your blood, the mosquito squirts some liquids into you. It is not fully understood what these liquids contain, but one is an anti-coagulant to keep your blood flowing and another might be a pain-killer so you do not feel the proboscis going into your pore. Some think that there might also be an antiseptic, but it is not accepted by all.

Some mosquitoes also introduce other parasites into you, which can cause diseases like malaria, dengue, yellow fever and Japanese jungle encephalopathy. Mosquitoes are to blame for killing millions of people every year. Luckily the liquid that they inject comes from another source other than where they store the blood they have already taken, otherwise they could distribute AIDS as well.

A Glance At Lawn Care Equipment That May Make A Person’s Yard Care Less Complicated

Written by Frank Foreman on May 23, 2010 – 11:02 am -

Take care of the lawn using the correct garden tools and equipment. From mowers to blowers, snowplows to garden hoses, pest control solutions to yard sprayers, there are many of tools every gardening fanatic have to know about to be able to have an idea of what to obtain.

1. Lawnmowers

To begin with, there are various types of mowers – riding mowers, trail lawn mowers, walk-behind mowers, gang-reel mowers. Lawn mowers contain rotating cutting blades on a horizontal axis. Whatever the form, these are particularly suited to a particular function. The littlest kind of lawnmowers are meant for people and are ideal for home gardens and lawns whereas the ride-on lawn mowers are appropriate for much larger landscapes and municipal recreational areas.

2. Weed Sprayers

The types of sprayers are tree sprayers, spot sprayers, broadcast sprayers, skid sprayers, and portable sprayers.. Then there are sprayer tanks, sprayer guns, and sprayer pumps. Sprayers are components of lawn care products which are made use of in order to administer fertilizers, pesticides and herbicides to garden plants. The sizes range between individually-portable units to self-propelled models such as the tractors.

3. Tillers

Pruning Bonsai Trees – Don’t Kill Your Tree With Bad Pruning

Written by Kelly de Borda on May 15, 2010 – 4:09 pm -

Pruning is an important part of bonsai tree care. When it comes to caring for your bonsai, you’ll find that you’ll be pruning for two distinct purposes. The first reason to prune is to clear away branches that clutter the clean lines of your tree. The other reason is to control the direction of growth. There are different ways to prune your bonsai – you may do branch pruning to direct the growth, or leaf pruning which will encourage new branches. Finally, you might also do root pruning, to help maintain the proper size and prevent illness.

The following tips can help you when you are pruning your bonsai:

* Pick the branches that you wish to keep and then carefully remove the others.

* If your plant is young, allow the trunk to mature before you do much pruning – it will help increase the chances of the tree’s survival.

* To help with choosing which branches need pruning, keep a simple sketch of the design you’d like for your bonsai. This will give you a clearer idea of what branches are obstructing or cluttering the style.
