Audio Mastering, what is the Best technique, Digital or Analog?

Written by John Cooper on March 12, 2010 – 2:07 pm -

Mastering, a form of audio post-production, is the process of preparing and transferring recorded audio from a source containing the final mix to a data storage device (the master); the source from which all copies will be produced (via methods such as pressing, duplication or replication).

The format of choice these days is digital masters although analog masters, such as audio tapes, are still being used by the manufacturing industry and a few engineers who have specialized themselves in analog mastering.

But which is the best, analog mastering or digital mastering? This is an important question, since there are many points in favour of one or the another.

Analog (or analogue) recording (Greek, ana is “according to” and logos “relationship”) is a technique used to store signals of audio or video information for later playback.

Analog recording methods store audio signals as a continual wave in or on the media. The wave might be stored as a physical texture on a phonograph record, or a fluctuation in the field strength of a magnetic recording. This is different from digital recording, which converts audio signals into discrete numbers.

Advantages and Disadvantanges of Online Music, still a Great Service Today?

Written by John Cooper on March 12, 2010 – 2:06 pm -

Recently, there has been a boom in music stores. There are also an increasing amount of new services popping up that enable musicians to sell their music directly to fans without the need for a 3rd party. These type of services usually use e-commerce enabled web widgets that embed into many types of web pages. This turns each web page into the musician’s own online music store.

A more recent development allows the instant downloading of radio-songs, as they are broadcast, straight to a mobile phone in less than 60 seconds.

But what are the advantages of major online music stores? It is a system that follows copyright laws, and centralized repository of music makes it easier to find the songs you want.

While the disadvantages are: many major stores only offer music in one audio format. Most labels will not allow their music to be sold in the common MP3 format that music players use. For the most part music that is sold in MP3 format is not sold at higher bit rate encoding.
