Laser Beam Surgery Is Not That Tricky

Written by Lester Avery on June 26, 2010 – 4:38 am -

If you are like me then you know how frustrating life can be when you can’t see. With all of the information out there on laser eye surgery it can be hard to figure out what is real and what isn’t.

The idea is to achieve better vision than before and most people who get their eyes fix end up that way. Still, sometimes, it just doesn’t work out as it should be. Thus, it could be worthwhile to dig deeper into the topic of LASIK.

Before plunging in and going for the procedure, it might benefit you to know a few things about it first. You should expect early on that there is a possibility that the outcome may not be what you expected it to be. Still, 80% of the people who go through the surgery come out okay, so there is no urgent need for worry.

The biggest worry is that you will undergo the procedure and end up with a set of eyes can no longer see the hands in front of them. This can happen of course but it is very rare and shouldn’t be as big of a concern as you make it out to be. But this leads me to remind you that you need to do as much research as you can about the doctor doing the operation on your eyes.

What Is The Number One Laser Eye Treatment

Written by Tony Harris on June 10, 2010 – 10:05 am -

Like most things in life you generally get what you pay for and laser eye surgery is no different. Some people can afford the cheapest possible treatments where as others may have a bigger budget. There are both budget and premium treatment options available and you surgeon will likely go through all the alternatives.

If you want the very best laser eye surgery then you are going to have to pay more money. Does Laser Eye Surgery Last Forever?

Written by Steve Smith on May 29, 2010 – 9:19 am -

When people decide to have laser eye treatment they are doing so with intention of never having to wear glasses or contact lenses again. If they are going to spend all that money on the surgery then they want some sort of guarantee as to how long the effects will last for. Most people expect their vision to last forever.

Like most things in life there are no absolute guarantees when it comes to laser eye surgery. No surgeon will ever tell you that your vision will remain perfect for a certain amount of time. If your surgeon tells you this then don’t believe him as it is impossible to predict the future.

Most people only need laser eye surgery once but if you require a second treatment this is called a laser enhancement/ laser re-treatment. This is generally only carried out when you vision has deteriorated to a certain level (normally driving standards) and that your prescription has stabilised.

Approximately 92% of the people having laser eye surgery only need the procedure once. That means that about 8% of people will need a laser enhancement/ re-treatment. A surgeon who has a lower enhancement rate than 8% is performing better than average and would be an excellent surgeon to choose.

There are optional extras that can be added on to your treatment that mean you are more liley to get 20:20 vision. Most surgeons would agree that the best laser eye treatment that is currently available is Intralase Lasik with wavefront technology. This type of treatment is the safest, most accurate and has the quickest and most comfortable recovery period. The reason Intralase lasik with wavefront is considered the gold standard in laser eye surgery is because of the following:

Lasik: You will typically have to choose between Lasik and Lasek and Lasik is by far the most popular procedure. Approximately 7 times more Lasik procedures are carried out than compared with Lasek. The reason for this is because Lasik has a much quicker and less painful recovery period.

Things You Need To Ask Your Laser Vision Surgeon

Written by Tony Harris on April 3, 2010 – 12:02 pm -

Choosing the best possible laser eye surgeon is the single most important thing when it comes to getting the vision you have always dreamed of having. Although the support staff and technicians are important, they pale in to insignificance when it comes to your surgeon. The following lists the questions you should ask your eye doctor before deciding to have the treatment:

How many laser eye treatments have you performed: You should aim to find an experienced surgeon who has carried out lots of procedures over a long period of time. You can be almost guaranteed that an experienced surgeon is a good surgeon. Ideally you want your eye doctor to have carried out over 5000 operations.

What are your laser re-enhancement rates? A laser re-enhancement simply means a patients laser eye surgery has had to be repeated at some point after the initial procedure. The average laser re-enhancement rate is about 5-10% so anything below this is good!

What are your complication rates? Ask what percentage of the surgeons patients result in complications. Obviously the lower the better! You would hope the complication rate to be below 1%. It is also worth asking what percentage of the surgeons patients end up with worse vision after surgery than they had before surgery. This should be very low.

What Is Laser Eye Surgery?

Written by Tony Harris on March 17, 2010 – 12:33 pm -

Laser eye surgery is a life changing procedure which has corrected the site of millions of people worldwide and the numbers continue to grow. If you are considering laser eye treatment, then you must be either long sighted, short-sighted or have astigmatism. Laser eye surgery is capable or correcting all these types of visual problems and the accuracy at which it can do this has improved dramatically over the past 10 years.

Understanding exactly why you have poor eye sight is the first step in understanding how laser eye surgery works. Having perfect vision and therefore no glasses, simply means that your eyes naturally focus the light entering your eye onto your retina at the back of the eye. The retina is the part of the eye that is the most important when it comes to seeing perfectly.

If you are long sighted, the light entering your eye is focussed behind your retina. If you are short sighted, the light entering your eye falls in front of the retina. Astigmatism is caused by the shape of your eye being different in one direction compared with the other, resulting in blurred vision. Special lenses are needed to correct this eye sight problem.

Understanding the Side Effects of LASIK Vision Correction

Written by David Allen on March 13, 2010 – 12:59 pm -

With the advancements in LASIK technology, LASIK eye surgery is quickly becoming a popular form of vision correction. This may be largely due to the fact that the surgery can permanently correct your vision and has relatively few side effects. Be advised, this is still a surgery and therefore requires an experienced and skilled LASIK eye surgeon. It is recommended that you choose a doctor with a successful past in performing LASIK.

The side effects of LASIK eye surgery are experienced by a relatively small percentage of patients. It has been reported that about 1 to 5% of patients will experience some kind of side effect. Fortunately, the majority of these patients experience very minor side effects and usually have good LASIK results overall.

Fortunately, surveys have presented a fairly clear explanation of these side effects and the different factors. One of the main factors has been found to be the surgeon you choose. In general, some of the best LASIK eye surgeons have been found to be in San Diego. San Diego LASIK eye surgery surgeons have had excellent results associated with performing LASIK eye surgery. Some of the other side effects include 1.6% of patients reporting sensitivity to light, 3.5% reporting night vision problems, and about 2.7% reporting fluctuation.

Explaining The Different Types Of Laser Eye Surgery

Written by Tony Harris on March 12, 2010 – 12:48 pm -

Over a million people throughout the world have already had laser eye surgery and there seems to be no let up in its popularity. As laser eye surgery gets more accurate and the risks continue to reduce, there has never been a better time to have the treatment. In many clinics the price of laser eye surgery has also reduced over the past few years, meaning you get perfect vision for cheaper than ever before.

Lasik and lasek are the 2 main types of laser eye surgery accounting for about 99% of all laser eye surgery treatments. The reason they are so popular is due to the amazing visual results they produce. Approximately 90% of people having one of these procedures end up having driving vision or better following surgery.

Lasik is far more common a procedure than Lasek mainly due to fact that Lasik eye surgery results in less discomfort and quicker healing times when compared with Lasek. This means people can return to work and normal activities after the procedure. People can also drive sooner following lasik meaning they can gain their independence back sooner.

How Much Does LASIK Eye Surgery Cost?

Written by Barbara Henderson on February 28, 2010 – 7:36 am -

Most people don’t look into LASIK eye surgery because they assume it is too expensive. While it is true that when LASIK first was introduced the cost was very high. However, today LASIK has become very affordable for even the average income household. The overall cost of LASIK eye surgery is typically dependent on that depth of the necessary correction, the doctor you wish to perform your surgery, and the type of laser you need.

Because the complexity of the surgery you will need is related to the severity of your correction, it is important you do not wait to make your decision. As the longer you live with eye problems the more complex your surgery becomes which in turn increases costs.

Upon learning about the different LASIK mapping systems available, you should discover that wavefront is considered to be one of the best options, although it is the most expensive. The surgical procedure involves two different types of scalpels. One is a mechanical scalpel the other is a laser scalpel. Choosing to go with only the mechanical scalpel and no wavefront system, will keep the lowest costs at around $1500. Choosing to go with only the laser scalpel and no wavefront system, and you can expect to pay somewhere near $2000. If you want the best, and go for the laser scalpel and a wavefront mapping system, you can expect to pay nearly $2500.
