Now what do you do?

Engineers that have completed their Cisco certification successfully often consider looking for a new job. These types people usually fall into three different categories. There are newbies who are entering IT for the first time, engineers who want a change or to work on a different technology, and finally professionals who want to move up in their career. All of these changes will most likely also come with the consideration of more money.

Either way, any change in your employment with lead to the inevitable job interview. Some folks do perfectly fine on job interviews, and other folks choke up due to the pressure. To help those who have interview stress we have a few pointers to get you through the situation and get your that job.

Be confident, but not cocky. The CCNA is a great certification to have, it’s where you start as a network engineer. But don’t walk into the interview thinking you know everything because you have a CCNA. There most certainly will be other CCNA’s, CCNP’s and possibly a CCIE or two at your interview – and they will be able to tell if you know your stuff or if you have an ego problem.

Interviews do not have to be as tough as they seem. People who are more prepared usually fare better. Interview preparation requires not only preparing questions and answers but also understanding the role and the company ethos as well. Of course, basic errors such as arriving late need to be avoided when trying to make that all important first impression.

There is nothing more annoying for an interviewer when someone answers a question that is not being asked. Interviewers are shrewd enough to know when you are avoiding answering a certain type of question. Don’t feel that you absolutely have to have an answer for every question especially if your experience. Always keep your answers on point and don’t ramble on for the sake of it.

Not telling the truth at an interview:

Interviewers are usually very skilled and will sense if you tell something that is simply not true. Even if you do get something by them, they will have you checked out and it will come back to plague you later. Imagine being fired from a job because you lied about your background and then have to try to explain this at an interview for another job. Interviewers are looking for honest people, any whiff of dishonesty and you will blow the interview.

The first thing to do is to read over this list of items that you should pay special attention to in order to have the best chance of landing the job. The first thing to do is research the company you are applying with. What we mean by this is to find out how long they have been in business, what products to they sell, how many employees do they have, what was the most recent press release, and in short find out the overall scope of the business and what it entails.

The next thing is to dress the part. Don’t just fall into the interview stereotype and wear a suit. If you are going into a manufacturing business and want to work on the floor, wear what everyone else wears. The key is to fit in and look like you already work there. I guy in a suit at a fork lift operating business will stick out like a soar thumb and people will notice that you don’t belong. This is the last thing you want to happen when interviewing for a job.
