Layered Service Providers, otherwise known as LSPs, are highly efficient yet highly technical and therefore volatile and vulnerable. In theory, the Winsock LSP, which is the one used by the vast majority of network applications, is simple. This is probably the reason so many believe that LSP applications can be performed in house or through outsourced developers.

As you probably know, every time a call is sent on Winsock API, it goes through a series of gates or interfaces before reaching the kernels. These gates, also known as layers, are where code can be injected in order to inspect, redirect or modify the call as it was originally made. This, in effect, is what happens when people implement adult content controls or inspect email and filter out or redirect spam.

The apparent simplicity for a programmer to insert some code is what leads many to believe they do not need to invest in a software program to do the job for them. The LSP is designed to intercept functions and complete tasks as assigned by the developer. It can report the network request to another process.
