The History Of The Temporary Tattoo

Written by Christien Tinsley on June 30, 2010 – 3:43 pm -

For centuries the tattoo has been a practice that cultures all over the world have adopted in one form or another. They have served as rites of passage, symbols of religious and spiritual devotion, marks of status and rank, decorations of bravery, pledges of love, sexual lures and marks of fertility, punishments, protection, amulets and talismans (as well as the marks of slaves, outcasts and convicts). They have been used as a way to show feelings toward other persons, places and things. Tattoos can be beautiful and fun to show off but they are also permanent and cannot easily (or painlessly) be removed. This is why temporary tattoos are ideal for those who want to “get inked” but do not want to mark their bodies permanently.

In Africa, Asia and the Far East, some cultures have used henna and even types of paint for temporary adornment for thousands of years, but the history of the temporary tattoo has never been narrowed down to the actual year when one was first manufactured as a consumer item. Some of the very first ones seen in the Western world appeared in Cracker Jack boxes around the turn of the century (late 1890s and early 1900s). They were also found in packs of gum and baseball cards as prizes. Food coloring was used to create the color in the tattoos and people would moisten the transfer paper to adhere designs to their skin.

Breaking In New Boots

Written by Justina Gray on June 30, 2010 – 3:27 pm -

Dr Martens are not easy to break in, people with sensitive feet find that they get blisters or sore feet. The problem is that the leather Dr Martens uses is thicker than the average shoe leather, because it is of such a high quality.

There are loads of urban legends about the best way to break in a pair of Dr Martens. Some of these legends are funny, some are dangerous, most are a bit strange.

The tried and tested method is to cover your feet in Vaseline then put on a thick pair of socks over the top. With your boots still on get in the shower and turn it on, so that the boots become soaked through. You then need to wear them either until they dry our or for as long as you can stand. Most army recruits do it this way.

If you do not want to get into the shower with your DMs on, get them really damp by wrapping them in wet towels and putting them on. Whichever method you choose the key is to keep your boots on for as long as possible. DM fanatics say that you have to leave them on for 48hrs, including in bed! Break your Dr Martens in on a day when you do not have to walk far or your feet will really suffer.

Stars & Watches – Celebrity Ads

Written by Paul James Harrison on June 30, 2010 – 3:18 pm -

Advertising for a piece of technology can pose serious challenges. The question of emotional communication, essential in a 30 second clip, becomes a most pursued goal. A watch is, in itself, a tool, a complex mechanism, a gadget. To take it beyond this level, many manufacturers have made use of the “star” connection: famous people, often actors or sportsmen but also leading scientists or even politicians, endorse one make of watches or another, some going so far as to retain the title of ambassador of the respective brand.

Since we mentioned technology, it may interest you to know that in the 1960s, when NASA sent out so many successful missions to space, a certain brand of watches was chosen as the only one fit for astronauts. However, forty years later, on the anniversary of the legendary moon landing of Apollo 11, Omega (for this is the maker in question) chose to advertise not by use of this worthy feat, but by attaching itself to the face and voice of the man in charge at the time, US president John F. Kennedy. This comes to prove that, at least in the minds of ad makers, a celeb is much more efficient than any technological feat, no matter how astounding.
